What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum Toxin, or also commonly referred to as Botox (or anti-wrinkle injections), are a well-known secret to help celebrities keep their appearances youthful. Botox is a purified protein which is injected directly into the muscle allowing it to temporarily relax, helping to soften facial expressions and improve the signs of aging.

Botox provides quick and effective therapy for wrinkles and facial lines which age, stress and worry can produce, even on a younger person's face. Here at Bristol Dental Practice, we use our extensive cosmetic knowledge and expertise to help aid you in obtaining younger-looking features.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is a muscle relaxant; it works by blocking nerve impulses in the muscles which cause wrinkles to form in the skin. The injections are performed using a very fine needle and typically no local anaesthetic is required. Once these muscles have 'relaxed', your wrinkles will appear reduced and/or can completely disappear in the treated areas. The visible effects of Botox can last for up to 4 months.

Botox is the most widely performed non-surgical cosmetic procedure and is highly effective at smoothing out facial wrinkles and crow's feet. Facial wrinkles will eventually appear in everyone, but can occur much sooner, for example in those who smoke, or those with sun-damaged skin, thereby bringing about the appearance of early ageing.

Where Can Botox Be Used?

Botox can be used in the following areas:

  • Forehead (frown lines)
  • Glabella (frown lines)
  • Around the sides of the eyes (crow's feet)
  • Above the eyes (to produce a brow lift)
  • Above the upper lip i.e. gummy smile (to show less of the gums above the upper front teeth when smiling)
  • Around the nose (to treat 'bunny lines', those forming when you scrunch your nose up)
  • Cheek muscles (to combat severe teeth grinding habits)
  • Chin muscles (to treat the fold line above the chin)
  • Palm of the hands (to treat excessive sweating)
  • Under the armpits (to treat excessive sweating)

How Long Does It Take To Work?

Botox usually takes ~3 days to start working and the effects can last up to 4 months. The length of effectiveness depends on the strength of your muscles and your individual response to the treatment.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Like all medicines, Botox can cause side effects, although any reactions are usually minimal and temporary. You may experience some slight discomfort as the needle enters the skin and you may have some bruising or bleeding where the needle has been placed. Very rarely, Botulinum toxin may result in muscle weakness.

All other rare, although possible side effects can be found within the patient information leaflet which comes with the product. Please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to provide this to you.

What To Expect On The Day

Before treatment, any make up will be removed and the face cleaned. The product is placed into the muscle with a very fine needle. You should not experience any discomfort, however, we can use a topical anesthetic cream. The treatment itself will take 15 minutes and you can return to your usual activities immediately afterwards.

Aftercare

After treatment with Botox you are advised to avoid rubbing the treated areas and to avoid any beauty treatments e.g. facial's, sauna's and extreme temperatures for up to 2 weeks. We will give you post-treatment instructions verbally and in written form.

However, if you are unsure about anything, please give us a call and we will be more than happy to help.
