Dermal Fillers

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers work slightly differently to Botox treatments in that they are used to help replace a naturally occurring sugar, hyaluronic acid. It exists in almost all living organisms and its key role is to absorb water and transport nutrients to the skin ensuring that its structure and volume is well maintained.

However, as we become older, our body's natural supply of this sugar gradually diminishes. By using a non-animal hyaluronic acid replacement, we can replenish this supply, thereby returning a more youthful appearance to your face.

Unlike Botox, which paralyses the muscle, dermal fillers will instantly redefine your features and restore volume to areas which have lost some of their bounce from the effects of gravity, sun-exposure and years of facial muscle movement. Anti-ageing facial fillers are the non-surgical way to achieve younger looking aesthetics and provide volume for tired lines and wrinkles, creating a smooth natural look.

Benefits of Dermal Fillers

The use of dermal filler injections is especially useful in areas such as around the lips and nose, and, although not a permanent treatment, can last for up to nine months, after which, the procedure may be repeated if desired. This procedure can also be used to fill out thinning lips, which is one of the more obvious signs of ageing for many people.

If you would like to look younger and would like to know more, or if you are just unsure if these procedures are for you, why not contact us at the Bristol Dental Practice and we will be more than happy to talk you through the array of cosmetic treatments we provide.

Where Can Dermal Fillers Be Used?

Dermal Fillers can be used in the following areas:

  • Lips (to plump them up)
  • Naso-labial folds (to reduce the crease between the nose and the sides of the mouth)
  • Mouth corners (to lift the corners of the mouth up)
  • Around the mouth (to treat smoker's lines)
  • Cheeks (to improve the facial cheek contour by raising the 'cheekbones')
  • Chin (to treat the fold line above the chin)

How Long Does It Take to Work?

The benefits of Dermal Fillers are that the effects are noticeable immediately after the procedure! The effects are long lasting, non-permanent and reversible. Because of this, most of our patients will return for a top up every 6-12 months.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Most reactions are generally minimal and temporary. You should expect some swelling and you may have some slight bruising however these reactions typically settle within a couple of days. All other rare, although possible side effects can be found within the patient information leaflet which comes with the product. Please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to provide this to you.

What to Expect on The Day

Before treatment, any make up will be removed and the face cleaned. We will use a topical anaesthetic on the injection sites. The product is placed into the muscle with a fine needle. You should only experience a small amount of discomfort during the procedure. The treatment itself will take 15-30 minutes and you can return to your usual activities immediately afterwards.

After treatment, you are advised to avoid rubbing the treated areas and to avoid any beauty treatments e.g. facial's, sauna's and extreme temperatures for up to 2 weeks. We will give you post-treatment instructions verbally and in written form.

However, if you are unsure about anything, please give us a call and we will be more than happy to help.
